Victoria Wallace - Artist Vision Statement

.
I believe that artistic inspiration is available to us all. It is a matter of being present, and observing the world around us. However, as a life-long self-employed and freelance artist, my hands-on practical experience and commercial arts background implore me to address the reaction of the viewer. I create artworks that reflect this deeply intertwined dichotomy within my artistic psyche.

My diametrically opposed methods begin with a deliberate intent and passion towards my subject. These are often quiet images at the outset of my approach. Then my alter ego enters the process. The uncertainty of my imagined/perceived reactions of viewers unleashes a dualistic inner battle. The results cause my art to be simultaneously calming and unsettling, playful and threatening, comical and cryptic.

In the creation of more surreal and abstract artworks, I take the opportunity to minimize and even avoid specific subjects and let paint, color and form interact. As my artwork develops and my connection to it deepens, I become the simple transporter of the message that first inspired me, free to allow the random intention of each brush stroke to evoke my passion within and towards the given medium. These less realistic pieces are almost a therapeutic flip side in process to the more representational artwork in my practice.

The emotional and spiritual synergy the viewer brings to each piece of my art, drives and challenges my creative process.
